San Jose - Nora Campos and Cindy Chavez, members of the San Jose City Council, joined the Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition, MACLA and other organizations working for environmental justice to sponsor the 2003 People's Earth Day.

Featuring five live bands and the Cherokee storyteller Gayle Ross, the People's Earth Day will be held on Sunday, April 27th, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., at the Plata Arroyo Park, corner McKee and King Roads in East San Jose. Some 3,000 people are expected to take advantage of the free event to learn more about neighborhood activities aimed at keeping the environment safe and clean. Workshops on clean water, environmental arts and crafts for children and other relevant subjects will take place simultaneous with the cultural presentations.

Councilwoman Nora Campos who represents some 94,000 residents of the city's District 5 said, "Healthy, vibrant and safe communities are quality of life issues that all citizens deserve to enjoy, regardless of their social background."

She said she was "proud" to sponsor the People's Earth Day celebration "because a healthy environment is key to improving the quality of life for East San Jose residents." Ms. Campos was also pleased with the collaborative work done by SVTC with the community. "I am proud so many residents have taken it upon themselves to get involved in this important issue."

Councilwoman Cindy Chavez who represents San Jose's historic District 3 said that the "People's Earth Day is a manifestation of our public commitment to a cleaner, safer environment and a celebration of environmental justice and community diversity." She sees the event as the start of a "movement to reclaim our urban communities for healthier children and families, and ultimately a better future for all."

The People's Earth Day is free and open to the public.
