FACES Leadership Academy graduation held on October 21, 2004
Family and Community Environmental School (FACES) Leadership Academy graduation was held on October 21, 2004. Twenty-three low-income immigrant women from East San Jose's Latina community received their diplomas certifying their full participation in the eight-week long Academy. The Academy uses popular education techniques to draw out participant's knowledge about their environment, build leadership and community organizing skills amongst participants and discuss strategies of collective action for creating social change.
The graduation ceremony featured games, foods and speeches from our participants. One of our participants, Cecilia Ceballos stated "When I first came to the FACES Leadership Academy, I was not very optimistic about the problems in my community. As I participated in the Academy, my thinking began to change and I realized that it is when we get involved and start acting that we find solutions and taking care of our communities."
HEJ will be conducting a FACES Leadership Academy annually. Members who graduate from the Leadership Academy have the option of joining HEJ's Community Action Group, a leadership body in charge of developing and implementing HEJ's environmental justice campaigns and activities.
