The European Union and several European countries are leading the rest of the world on takeback initiatives and toxic materials phaseouts in electronic equipment. The European Union's directives were officially enacted in February 2003.

Waste from Electrronic and Electrical Equipment (WEEE) and Restrictions on Hazardous Substances Directives (RoHS).
